Because of you, they keep asking and/or telling others what an HBCU is. It’s interesting to know students can tell you every TikTok dance, every inappropriate lyric in rap song, or even catch you up on reality TV gossip, but can’t tell me what an HBCU is! Not Anymore! Just posting the 4 big HBCU letters on the wall started the conversation of what HBCUs are and Why they exist. Representation is important as students need to SEE a physical manifestation of themselves. Now you may not want your child to go to an HBCU because “it doesn’t prepare them for the real world.” However, I respectfully disagree as nothing in life comes easy and you have to know how to maintain humility and good health in the face of adversity. You also have to know how to STAND OUT from others in all spaces. This is ONE foundational element taught by the HBCU. Let’s keep the conversation going and encourage students to research and discuss HBCUs!
