HOUSE, HOUSE, BABY 🧊
For this year’s MaArte Fair, I created an immersive installation that celebrates my brief return to my home country after studying abroad.
As a continuation to the Birthday Party installation that presented my collection to a jury last June, I wanted to rework on themes of nostalgia with the usage of familiar Philippine iconographic objects in a surrealistic way around the space.
The entrance and the main room is wrapped top to bottom in floral linoleum, which comes from a childhood memory of a plastic and colorful zip-up wardrobe I used to see at the basement of my grandmother’s home in the province (I wonder if it’s still there 🤔). The furniture and appliances are also wrapped in the same material, further enforcing the kitsch feel onto the viewer.
The idea of the birthday is done through the cake and treats on the table, however it’s more apparent in the bathroom set-up wherein disco lights, balloons, and music envelope the space.
Overall, the room is as in-your-face as ever — just how I like it. Celebrations will always be fascinating for how they mark milestones in our lives, like my first ever pop-up I guess haha. For what it’s worth, putting this up for everyone to enjoy is good enough of a reason to keep the party going. 🕺🏻💐🎂🫶🏼✨
