Shujaa is quite the little operator! He’s only been at the Nursery for two months, but he already has all its inner workings figured out. As the orphans prepared to head into the forest for the day, he whizzed around the corner in search of any treats that may have fallen to the wayside. His intuition was spot-on, as he quickly found and laid claim to a tasty pile of greens. (Shujaa has clearly been doing a lot of feasting — look at the dusting of leftover lucerne crowning his head!)
Shujaa was rescued in late August, after he was found hopelessly stuck in mud. Based on the churned earth around him, his family tried to free him, but their efforts were futile and they were forced to move on. By the time tourists discovered Shujaa mired in the embankment, his herd had long since left the area. The drought is full of these heartbreaking decisions; elephants must constantly be on the move, focused on greater survival instead of one individual.
Now, Shujaa has a family with us. At just ten months old, he is one of the youngest orphans currently in our care. He has a great journey back to the wild ahead of him — and you can be part of that journey by becoming one of his very first foster parents! To learn more, tap our link in bio or visit:
