Things i’m learning from my reactive dog :
The first thing I immediately learned after planning a trip around a reactive/anxious dog is to drop all expectations.
Expectations can be an already heavy thing to hold if you yourself are anxious person, but putting the pressure of how you EXPECT your dog to act is too much for them and for you when they are in their reactive journey. You could be completely prepared for everything, set your dog up for nothing less than success, but just because everything is set up to make it easy for them and they SHOULD be able to have a perfect time, doesn’t mean that’s how it’s going to go. And it’s honestly selfish in a way to expect them to shape their feelings to what you want.
Even though the first trip out of state with this guy was amazing, I know now that every time there is going to be something I can learn and do better for both him and myself next time and to always stay humble in that aspect.
(You can also have this mindset when it comes to your friends too;)) Be someone in others life that doesn’t hold heavy expectations over their heads. We’re not going to perfect every time, but we can keep trying. 🫶🏼
(The only pet friendly trail that in Zion is the Pa’rus Trail.)
