This is a really important and freeing conversation to have around sustainability. There will always be trade-offs. A perfect solution is unlikely. However, that shouldn’t keep us from pursuing better options. The reality of trade-offs and the inevitable presence of both good and bad consequences allows us to embrace a diversity of solutions. We can find freedom in the shortcomings of solutions by recognizing that diverse and inclusive problem-solving opens the door for problems to be solved in a variety of ways. The trade-off of pursuing perfection is delay. And delay is the biggest threat to missing the 1.5 degree climate change benchmark. Attention to detail and impact along with accountability is necessary, but we need to be realistic about the trade-offs and imperfect steps it'll take to reach better solutions. Embracing trade-offs also creates perspective that sustainability will look different for everyone based on the needs, choices, and access that we have. The more variety in business models we have, the more sustainability boxes we can check. The more people we can include in the process who will pursue sustainability in varied ways, the more progress we can make. Note: Acknowledging trade-offs isn’t an excuse or allowance for bad behavior— especially not at the expense of people. It’s important that we differentiate a trade-off from an exploitative behavior. We want to minimize trade-offs as we attempt to make progress and allow for grace as we recognize change is complex, but that doesn’t mean perpetuating human rights abuses in the name of progress.
