While most acne is “hormonal” to some extent, the term hormonal acne is often used to refer to acne in women that is attributable to hormonal fluctuations. It is also commonly referred to as “period acne” since it is often associated with specific phases of the menstrual cycle, but may also appear in pregnancy or menopause. As such, it is something that can affect women across many decades and can have a big impact on quality of life. Fortunately there are effective treatment options. It is often best treated by targeting the hormones (androgens) that activate sebaceous glands and trigger breakouts. There are both oral and topical prescription medications but spironolactone and oral contraceptive pills are two of the most common and effective. In the US the FDA recently approved Winlevi as a new topical option that may help for more mild cases. Generally other topical skincare and over the counter treatments are not likely to be as effective with this type of acne (particularly the deep painful cysts), so I recommend speaking with your doctor. #hormonalacne #acne #acnetreatment #spironolactone #acnecommunity #dermatologist #drkatiebeleznay
