Tova Friedman asks me what my tattoo means. “Well, it’s a frog with, like, a wizard's hat on.” She rolls her eyes. She asks me about the rest, at least the ones she can see on my arms. “I have a tattoo, too, you know?” she says with a sly smile. Tova got her tattoo in Auschwitz. She remembers the tattooist — a teenage girl prisoner — telling her that one day she’d be able to wear a blouse with long sleeves to cover the number. It helped her imagine a future outside the concentration camp. Not long after, the young woman whose shaking hands marked her arm with “A-27633” was marched off to the gas chamber.
