Since today, Maya Alam and Vitjitua Ndjiharine’s work “From Negative Space to Spaces of Resistance” is on view near the Gropius Bau as part of the Dekoloniale Berlin Residency programme 2022.
The site of the installation is on the grounds of the destroyed royal ethnological and anthropological museum, where the Gropius Bau’s parking lot can be found today. The work aims to illuminate the history of the location while celebrating the legacy of Black people in Germany. Across the site, a brusk-like application of paint on the floor marks this new territory, connecting transformed building fragments with two four-meter-high flags. The splash of colour, in an otherwise grey urban environment, combined with the ephemeral quality of the images and materials, flickers between a place of protest and one of hope.
