In the summer of 1962, 5-year-old Jonathan King watched officers in southwest Georgia beat his visibly pregnant mother, civil rights activist Marion King. Within months, the baby she was carrying was dead. The Justice Department and the FBI never charged anyone with the beating.
Now, six decades later, the federal government is expected to release its full investigative file on the attack. Jonathan King, now 67, was allowed to read the files early, and the documents confirm what he witnessed as a child — and what he says federal authorities failed to confront in real time.
