What a sad week. I’ve seen an Asian woman attacked on her way to church while men watched and closed the door on her. I’ve seen Asians voicing their prejudice against other Asians for political gain. I’ve seen people who publicly confess the same faith as me being racist. At a previous church I witnessed in a congregational meeting outspoken elders at a loss to utter the words that racism is sin. So I’ll be very clear on this Easter weekend in case it is confusing to anyone because there seems to be some misinformation and misrepresentation of the Bible’s stance on these matters. Racism is sin. White supremacy is sin. It’s wrong and goes against the teachings of the Bible. It needs to be stopped when we see it in our everyday lives from work settings, in our homes, to our places of worship, and everywhere in between. Don’t wait for someone else to say something or do something. Whenever we witness or experience it, call it out right there on the spot. If we don’t name it and stop it, it will continue to spread like cancer. And just to be clear, causal racism is still racism. Just because one has become so enmeshed in it that it is now “casual” to them does not make it any less damaging or sinful or traumatic. How can you help? Stop racism and white supremacy when you see it, when you hear it, when you witness it happening to another human. Speak up and stand up for others. Educate yourself on how to be Anti-Racist. There are plenty of resources available. @jemartisby’s books are good places to start. Do the work. Be humble. Keep going even when you make mistakes. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
