Version No. 2 of Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe, 1968
Oil on canvas
78 × 58 in. (198 × 147.5 cm)
"Bacon had been heavily criticised for his allegedly gratuitous placement of the syringe in his first version of this subject Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe, 1963 (63‐01), But he must have found the criticisms irksome, and in this second version he appears to have reacted by wreaking his revenge on the sceptics with an even starker manifestation of the idea."
