Thinking back to last year spending an afternoon at Bass Rock. Lying 2km off shore, it’s home to the worlds largest colony of northern gannets with over 150,000 birds during the peak of the season. Stepping onto the island is indescribable- the noise, the movement, the smell - it’s a special place 🪨✨ This year the birds have been hit badly by avian influenza, aka birdflu. Not sure on numbers yet but there have been huge losses, and I fear we are only at the beginning of this disaster as birds all around the coastline are falling victim.
