Mweya’s story continues to surprise us. The latest plot twist revealed itself yesterday, when she strode up to the stockades with Nguvu in the lead! It all began last Tuesday, when Mweya made a surprise arrival at the Voi stockades. She was with her newborn baby boy, Mojo; her three-year-old daughter, Mwitu; and her best friend’s daughter, Eden, who is clearly the nanny in charge. Based on reports, they had travelled across 100 kilometres of waterless land. It is an extraordinary journey to take at the height of the drought, let alone with two young babies. We can only surmise that Mweya when Mweya gave birth to Mojo, she realised she would struggle to produce enough milk for her suckling daughter and infant son in the drought. Knowing she would find support and supplemental food at Voi, where she grew up, she made the brave decision to journey ‘home.’ Mweya spent the next several days resting and refuelling at the stockades — but yesterday, she was clearly ready for action! She took a brief jaunt into the bush that morning. When she returned, she had an old friend with her! Nguvu is an orphan we rescued during the drought of 2017. Although he initially branched off with Mweya’s ex-orphan herd, he recently decided to join another wild herd who has been riding out the drought in the environs of Voi. Mweya clearly clocked that he was in the area and decided to get the gang back together. We’re happy to report that Nguvu is looking very well despite the challenging conditions, although he has been enjoying the supplemental food we can offer at Voi. We look forward to the next plot twist in Mweya’s story, whatever it may be!
