Why I look for flights with long layovers and tips to maximize them (save and share this post)!
1. I absolutely love getting the best bang for my buck. Booking flights with long layovers allows me to visit two cities or even two countries for the price of one.
2. Be sure the layover time is during the day so you can actually do things.
3. Check that the layover destination doesn’t require and entry visa or if it does make sure you get one ahead of time or that you can get one on arrival.
4. Most international airports have luggage storage inside so whether you’re team carry-on only or your checked bags don’t go through to your final destination. This is at a minimal cost, usually a a couple dollars an hour or a flat rate for the day of $10 per bag.
5. Some airlines like Emirates and Etihad offer hotel rooms for free when having a long layovers that include overnights in destinations like Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
6. Some airports also offer free layover city tours like in Singapore. They have tours of various lengths depending on your layover length. You can sign up ahead of time or try to walk on a tour once you land.
7. Locations with airports close to the city center ideal since it cuts down on transport time to the things you probably want to do. Cities with great public transportation/trains directly at the airport to the city center make this easy and affordable.
8. Make sure your layover time is long enough! I do not recommend leaving the airport on a 4 hour layover, especially if you’re international and have to go through customs. An 8 hour layover is the minimum amount of time I book to explore other cities but ideally 12 hours. On our trip to Morocco we had a 12 hour layover in Madrid and we had fresh paella, went on a tour of the palace, took a boat ride on the lake and watched a flamenco dinner show.
9. Long layovers are a great way to get a feel for a city to see if you want to visit for a longer period of time or if it’s not a place you want to explore more.
Have you taken advantage of a long layover? Where did you stop?
