The Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change is a youth-led organization from the South Pacific. The two main objectives of the organization are, the campaign to seek an UN General Assembly to request an advisory opinion on climate change from the International Court of Justice (ICJAO campaign) and to educate and activate youth to take climate action. What started as a classroom initiative by 27 law students from the University of South Pacific in 2019, the ICJAO campaign is now backed by 79 states and 1,500 civil society organizations and youth from all over the world.
The climate emergency is a human rights crisis of unprecedented proportions. It is manifesting in rising oceans, droughts, floods, typhoons and bleached coral reefs. It is affecting health, food, water, housing, livelihoods and life itself. It is a threat to not only individuals but to entire cultures and peoples. People on the frontlines of the climate crisis, such as low-lying Pacific islands, are losing access to clean drinking water, food sources, and in some cases are being forced to migrate away from their homelands.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the world’s highest court. An advisory opinion from the ICJ on climate change would provide an authoritative and coherent statement on the international legal obligations of countries to respond effectively to climate change. Our aim is to have an ICJ advisory opinion that integrates climate change treaty law with relevant customary international legal principles and human rights obligations.
Achieving an ICJ advisory opinion on climate change requires a majority vote in favour of a resolution calling for it at the United Nations General Assembly’s 77th session. Therefore, we need your help in calling all on the leaders of all United Nations member countries to vote in favour of Vanuatu’s resolution at the upcoming UN General Assembly. We will be delivering this petition in the lead up to the vote. It is time to hear what the world's highest court has to say on the world's biggest problem.
