You don’t have to homeschool your kids to travel frequently! Here are tips on how we take multiple trips a year with kids in public school (save and share this post):
1. There are tons of school breaks you can take advantage of. For our big trips to Egypt (16 days), Jordan (11 days) & Guatemala (9 days) the girls missed zero days of school. We traveled over Thanksgiving, Winter & Spring Break for these trips.
2. There’s a myth that holiday travel is so much more expensive but that’s not always the case. Now to travel within the US for Thanksgiving, yes there’s a premium but Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated in other countries. Our flights to Guatemala were $150RT for Thanksgiving. We’ve previously spent Thanksgiving week in Morocco and those flights were $400RT. Tap the link in my bio for the site we use to find fight deals.
3. Know your child’s school policy on attendance. We read our districts handbook and learned how many days of school the girls could miss. We make sure if we take them out, it doesn’t go above these allotted days. A lot of the missed days for us end up being early release days which limits the impact on their missed time at school. We also will add a day to a holiday weekend.
4. Know your child & build a relationship with their teacher. Our kids do very well in school and these are sentiments we’ve confirmed with their teachers so we feel okay if they miss a few days. Our trips are mostly educational too, they’re gaining real life experience with the things they’re learning in the classroom, like seeing the Pyramids with their own eyes and learning about the Mayans by actually spending a day with them.
5. Let their teachers know as far in advance as possible & get missed work ahead of time. Whether you're traveling by car or plane your child should have more than enough time to complete their school/homework during travel time or in the evenings.
6. Of course your child’s age & individual needs will dictate what you feel comfortable with & what’s best for your child but this is what we do.
What are your thoughts on missing school for travel? How do you handle it? Teachers I think we'd all especially love to hear from you!
