#BlackVisionaries ✨ “I grew up in a space where everyone was watching out for each other,” says @feek____ (Taofeek Abijako), the Nigerian-born founder of @headofstate_. Although his father designed clothes in Lagos, Taofeek didn’t see himself becoming a fashion designer. And while he’s made waves with his designs, it’s not that simple; Head of State is his vehicle for pursuing community initiatives in Nigeria and Albany, where he founded his brand as a high school senior. “I gather people from this community and we figure out the problem we're looking to tackle and have a conversation,” he says. As Taofeek sees it, community and conversation are core to building spaces where “people that look like me want to see themselves.”
In 2021, Head of State received a $100,000 #BlackVisionaries grant from Instagram and the @brooklynmuseum. Last week we announced the 2022 grant program: #BlackVisionaries. Find the details at the link in our bio. Apply by July 29. #ShareBlackStories
