Reposted from @lordrarerock SOUNDS COME CRASHING - Rory Gallagher performing “Shadow Play” at the Montreux Music Festival in Switzerland in 1979. Rory’s playing speaks for itself and he was truly a virtuoso guitarist. His unique playing, deeply rooted in blues music, was truly a sight to behold. His live sets were strictly centered around the music and the fans who came to see him truly appreciated the skills and small details he would present. Although there was pressure to be more flamboyant with the current state of live shows, he wasn’t one to go up there and have a bunch of theatrics going on, like many of the bands active during that time. However, it was the substance in his work that ensured fans that came to see him left gasping for more. Rory would just get up on stage, with the same old flannel shirt and denim jeans, and rip his very weathered 1961 Fender Stratocaster. Just check out him getting right up within the fans space during this solo as he goes out into the crowd continuing his solo. Not only was his guitar playing phenomenal, he was a uniquely expressive singer who blended Irish feelings with a bluesy, rock tone to create a sonic landscape that was extremely special. In a 1991 interview, Rory talked about how this song came to be - "I can distinctly remember writing 'Shadow Play' with a 12-string guitar because I was in bed with the flu in Ireland, and the effect of the flu seemed to affect me with the lyrics. Because with a bad flu you get slightly dazed with sleep and all that.” Unfortunately, Gallagher had liver issues in 1995 and underwent a transplant. He tragically left this earth later that year at the age of 47 due to complications from the transplant. Rory was a gift to music and taken too soon... Enjoy iiii]; )'
