Working in video, installation, drawing, and sculpture, Won Cha’s practice forms connections between personal narratives and institutionalized histories. Through archival and vocabular approaches, he deals with the reverberations of cultural trauma, resistance movements, and racialized oppression while tracing various incarnations of “sites.” The series of drawings and collages presented in the group exhibition ‘Various Others,’ in response to the killings of the Korean spa workers in Atlanta on March 16, 2021, draw from the artist’s personal experiences of immigration, assimilation, and immigrant labor in the U.S., in tandem with the account of an unknown Korean migrant plantation worker, stripped of identity and branded LAIE379. Cha references phonetically memorized serial numbers and titles of nail polish colors alongside the label LAIE379 expressing feelings of emptiness and isolation of a Korean worker trapped in a debt-based economy within the Hawaiian sugar plantation run by white landowners.
