If you only read one line of this entire post...I don’t want it to be the headlines of me saying, “featured in British Vogue!”...I want it to be this: Getting published doesn’t mean you’ve “made it” as a photographer and isn’t a goal we should be obsessing over in the industry. I don’t want to take away what incredible and beautiful couples I have chosen as my Vogue features or WHY I chose their photos (you can read about each couples day in the posts that I have shared) But in full transparency, I can’t share my art without using this as an opportunity to educate, inform and help you really really see that these posts are more than just a “perfectly curated” carousel or an ego-driven fanfare blasted message. They’re paid ads and that is simply what it comes down to. There is no “woke up and found out I was featured in Vogue!” Or “they just wanted to feature my photo in the magazine!” Without there being some type of compensation, planning and months of preparation involved. Back in March, I was reached out to by Vogue, given the opportunity to pay them to advertise my photos. This is called an advertorial. I was allowed to choose which size I wanted in the magazine and was given the cost of each sizing option, as the bigger the photo the larger of an investment. I initially felt torn over the entire experience, but in the end I decided to go with it for one reason: Simply because I was proud of myself. Proud that a high-end magazine recognized me and wanted me to pay them thousands of dollars? No, not really. Sure that was a cool feature. But...I was proud because I genuinely am proud of how I’ve found myself, my art, and my amazing couples and that I love what I do. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in thinking that if you just try hard enough or are simply posting, doing, booking, paying, etc. more more MORE that you’ll “make it”. When the reality is, is if you’re proud of your work and how far you’ve come in your personal life and business...then isn’t that....enough? Aren’t YOU enough?
