Angela Lansbury, who starred as Jessica Fletcher on 12 seasons of ‘Murder, She Wrote,’ passed away at 96. ‘The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday,’ her family said in a statement. An actor whose career spanned 8 decades, Lansbury earned an Academy Award nomination for her first film role in 1944’s ‘Gaslight.’ She went on to be nominated two more times for 1945’s ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ and 1962’s ‘The Manchurian Candidate.’ She has also won five Tony Awards. Lansbury is perhaps best known for her work on the television series ‘Murder, She Wrote,’ which originally aired from 1984 to 1996. ‘What appealed to me about Jessica Fletcher is that I could do what I do best and have little chance to play — a sincere, down-to-earth woman,’ she said in a 1985 NYT interview. ‘Mostly, I’ve played very spectacular b*tches.
