Last night I joined my creative family and peers of NYC to help celebrate baby sis @honeydijon as she received acknowledgement from @leslielohmanmuseum for her outstanding work as an artist. I have to say, I was emotional and really proud as I stood there watching as @opaltuesday and @louievega presented her. I’ve never really spoken publicly about our story, being there at the humble beginnings. Our friendship and bond was swift and quick and we connected. Through music and laughter, mostly... circa 95. As my DJ career was taking off she was there, one of my closest pals and confidants, both of us relatively new to NY and struggling artists. She supported me at my humble as hell gigs and danced til my needles had to be weighed down by coins! I encouraged her when she wanted to literally do it all and thought she wasn’t being taken seriously. I remember that. And so we went to record shops together. I shared my music to make sure she had some good stuff when her first ever gig at an east village lounge was offered to her and beforehand helped her sharpen a few skills on those two decks (that she’s mastered like no other). Her fist club gig was as my fill-in at King when I flew to Italy to play, I made sure of it! I’m being flooded with too many memories to share here... And so it was sweet and moving for me to get acknowledged on her big night and to see her, not just as my friend (or the once upon a time pesky baby sis), but as Honey F*ckin Dijon! Musician Producer Fashion Icon. What? ... that’s not who I talk with on the phone btw 😝 ... Hats off to you, Miss Honey. Look at what’s happened! This is good stuff. :)
