NECK PAIN OR HEADACHES? SUBOCCIPITAL MUSCLES & OAA-COMPLEX [MANIPULATION OF THE UPPER CERVICAL SPINE HVLA] From my previous posts you know that the suboccipital area is very prone to get stiff and immobile, when the upper cervical spine can't rotate properly, that motion get picked up by the lower cervical spine, which we want to be actually more stable. That’s why it is very important for me as a therapist to always check this important area and to mobilize it if I feel any restrictions. Releasing some of this tissue can directly affect and relieve your headaches or neck pain without the use of any medicine! After releasing the suboccipital area from adhesions, tension and trigger points I usually use manual mobilization techniques for the upper cervical spine as shown in my previous posts. This video shows a manipulation of the upper cervical spine using the Chin-Hold-Technique HVLA. Before you perform this technique, you should make sure to have released all myofascial structures which can cause an upper cervical spine problem as I explained in my previous posts. Usually, if you do a proper myofascial release treatment, the upper cervical spine won’t cause a problem any more, but sometimes it still can. If so, it requires a high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust technique, otherwise it can force Headaches, Neck pain, TMJ-Syndrome, Sinusitis, Eye strain, Concussion, Toothache, Shoulder pain or problems.
