We know that the brain already has a preconceived idea of what self-defense is and how daunting or scary it may feel to step into that class... we know because almost everyone has felt these feelings and with good reason. So many classes do not take a trauma-informed understanding to their class culture and instruction. Feeling scared to jump into class is only neutralized if the class is actually safe. The main things I tell my friends to look for when they want to find a beginners self-defense class: āœ… trauma-informed instructors āœ… physically safe practices (slow speed, gentle practice) āœ… psychologically safe practices (asks for consent, uses safe verbiage) Concerning: 🚩 victim blaming 🚩 aggressive practice/instruction When looking for a self-defense class, what are the main things you look for?
