“I’m thinking of you.”
Out of context, it can sound like a creepy line from a thriller. 😂 (or “cringe” as the kids say)
In real life, psychology says it’s one of the most underrated ways we stay connected.
I recently re-read a New York Times article by Catherine Pearson showing that we consistently underestimate how much a simple check-in means — a text, a thought, a quick hello. People appreciate it far more than we expect.
That one message is what led to this evening.
It also brought me back to a chapter I wrote in my book, Practical Optimism, on adult friendships — the different kinds we have, how they change, and how they’re created and sustained over time. Connection doesn’t require grand plans. It starts small.
Being here felt full circle. I first visited Faena in Buenos Aires nearly 20 years ago, when it first opened — drawn to its vision as a cultural hub, where art, conversation, performance, and people come together. Over the years, returning to Faena spaces with friends has often been about the same thing: travel as a way to reconnect and hold sacred space for friendship. This year marks Faena’s 20th anniversary, which feels fitting.
Science-backed takeaway (not creepy):
Text your friends. Say the thing. Don’t overthink it.
Small gestures create real moments — and sometimes, beautiful nights like this one. #optimism #practicaloptimism #friendship #doctorsuevarma #newyorkcity #nyc #faena #faenahotel #nyctravel #nychotel #mindfset #mindsetmatters #mindsetshift
