When I was a kid in New England my dad told me that if I sit still and stare long enough at any of the old drystone walls in the backyard, a snake would poke its head out and wave hi with its tongue. During the past years of pandemic, when I’ve felt so far away from home, I’ve played in my childhood backyard over and over again in dreams.
