A group of people gathered at Congressional Cemetery in D.C. on Saturday morning for an unusual reason: to practice dying. One by one, participants reclined on a makeshift bed, as Threshold Choir — a local singing group that comforts people near the end of life — serenaded them. The exercise was led by Laura Lyster-Mensh, Congressional Cemetery’s first-ever “death doula.” On Saturday, she held the inaugural “Death Doula Day” — the first in a series of weekly events at the cemetery to encourage people to talk openly about death.
