Sarah Biffin was one of Regency England’s most admired miniaturists. Born without arms or legs, she trained herself to paint despite her parents’ misgivings, using her mouth or a paintbrush tied to her sleeve. She was dubbed “the World’s Eighth Wonder”, and her live painting sessions once drew huge crowds; she showed at the Royal Academy and sold her pictures to George IV. As a new exhibition at the @philip_mould_gallery in London draws her out from the shadows, Matthew Dennison reminds us that she has always been exceptional.
