Richard Mensah, Why we resist - The Igbo Landing, 2021 🔴 The first time I viewed this incredible masterpiece in the home of the brilliant Richard Mensah, I was speechless and moved almost to the point of tears. Knowing the painful history of how enslaved people of Igbo origin jumped overboard their slave ships to their death in order to escape a life of servitude in a foreign land, was one thing, but seeing it so vividly and violently depicted made the horror of the history that much more real, palpable and irrefutable. I told Richard at the time, that a piece of such magnitude deserved to be in a museum or institution that would permit for public viewing; or in the trust of a private collector who would loan the work out to ensure that people have a chance to study, witness and appreciate the importance and historical significance of this piece. Unsurprisingly, I manifested just that; as the piece has been earmarked to enter the permanent art foundation collection of one of the most amazing and prolific art patrons in the US.
