📍Traditional Yelamu, Ohlone Territory
Today, in the early morning, crowds gathered in the pre-dawn darkness at Alcatraz Landing to board boats to Alcatraz Island and participate in the annual Indigenous Peoples’ Thanksgiving Sunrise Gathering, organized by the International Indian Treaty Council. People joined together on the island to give thanks for the continued survival, cultural resilience, and resistance to erasure of Indigenous people here, in the Americas, and all around the world, and to honor those who were at the 1969-1971 Occupation of Alcatraz by the Indians of All Tribes. This is one of two annual sunrise gatherings hosted on the island every year.
There is so much to be thankful for in the parks. There are long, complicated, and sometimes painful histories in the parks, too. By honoring the current resilience and past history of the Indigenous people of these lands and waters, we can properly celebrate the present and future together. Many people don't realize Alcatraz Island is part of the national parks—a place significant to our nation and all the world. We are grateful for these incredible opportunities to reflect and be together in the parks.
Hear directly from some of the original 1969 protestors at the link in our bio.
