Here's a shot from this past Sunday's Portola Festival in SF. Something kind of interesting happened during my set, which I don't think has ever happened to me before. During the long scratch solo I perform on 'Our Pathetic Age,' I closed my eyes and felt myself disappear for awhile, just completely forgot there was an audience and went somewhere else in my mind. I've seen other musicians in a zone like this plenty of times, and always imagined what it might feel like, but I've generally been too nervous and self-conscious to allow myself that deeper level of communion with the music in front of a crowd. I guess I began to believe that it would never happen, but at age 50, it did, for the first time. I know it doesn't make me a better DJ, or on an equal plane with the great musicians I admire, but it was a first, so I thought I'd share.
