10 years ago this week I found myself in a pretty amazing situation. I was working on retainer for @diplo transversing the planet documenting parties, musicians and cultures everywhere. I had just published my first book with Rizzoli and I was tagging along with Diplo to Jamaica to record a reggae record with Snoop Dogg. Some of you may remember this record where he changed his name to Snoop Lion and there was a Vice documentary called Reincarnation about this transformation (if you dont blink you will see me pop in this documentary once or twice). At any rate a few sessions into the recording at Tuff Gong studios in Kingston I found myself in a tiny control room with two Vice camera people, Snoop’s photographer and lots of weed being smoked. Snoop seemed to having a hard time getting into the zone and complained about too many cameras being in the room (probably just me) so I showed myself out. I found myself in the studio parking lot on a Sunday evening not sure what to do with myself. Luckily we had a driver on call so I went up to him and started talking to him to see if he could take me somewhere so I could do something more fun or productive than standing around the parking lot. He mentioned that there was a Sunday night party called IGLOO down at Hellshire Beach that was fun. I asked him to drive me there and for sure it was one of the wildest things I had ever seen. I ended up photographing so much at this party that it made up probably half of my first monograph zine in the Blow Your Head series that later turned into several zines and 22 short documentary films. This is still some of my favorite work that I have ever done and I miss making more of this kind of journalistic work. I thank you Snoop for kicking me out of the studio that day. Without that, maybe none of the rest would have happened 😂
