Today, October 11, would have been Thay's 96th birthday. But while Thay passed away in January, it remains his "continuation day" because his monastic and lay community carry on his life's work and remember him daily in the way they walk, eat, teach, and smile.
In this clip from one of his Dharma talks, Thay offers his deep insights into Buddhist teachings on no-birth and no-death. You can watch a longer 8-minute clip via the link in the bio.
"On our so-called birthday, instead of singing Happy Birthday, we can sing Happy Continuation Day. It’s closer to the truth. Happy Continuation Day. The day of conception is also a continuation day. The day of birth is also a day of continuation.
And how about the other days? We have already spent many days— twenty years, thirty years, fifty years, eighty years already, and how can we call these days? All of them are continuation days. And we die and we are reborn every day.
Birth is happening because death is happening at the same time. Without death, birth is not possible. And without birth, death is not possible."
