A close friend told me at the new year, "You need to dig deep into yourself and figure out why you're attracted to risk." It gave me chills and is one of the most thought provoking things she's ever said. The answer is a work in progress, and it's a fascinating look inward... more on that later :) But my initial response to her was this photo–there are many beautiful experiences and people in my life that wouldn't exist if I didn't make the "risky" choice. This image was taken by @johndavidbecker, who chased me down several blocks in Brooklyn when he saw me crossing the street wearing a bunch of vintage rancher pieces (second photo). I'm not saying we should always talk to strangers and let them take photos of us in a studio (definitely not!), and I'm not promoting reckless decision making. But there is a lot of unconscious processing that happens when we make decisions that we can't explain, let alone justify. And while we don't have a clear grasp of how the subconscious works to keep us safe and guide our behavior, I'd argue that a lot of times it's more accurate then some of the ideas we conjure up in our rational minds. Thank you for approaching me in the street @johndavidbecker and for this photo, you've since become a great friend and I live for these types of interactions 🤍
