Gerhard Richter's image of Her Majesty was taken from a newspaper and rephotographed by the artist in 1966 for this lithograph. The noticeable blurring created in the printing process blends the black and white into a cloudy grey, making it almost impossible to make out the original portrait. Richter was fascinated by the wide distribution of imagery that printmaking created, and in this work intends to replicate not just the image, but its medium.
