When photographers start out making images of people, a natural starting place is to learn the technical aspects of the work. Everything is about finding or creating the best light.
Then you learn more about the processes of the greats: Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, and Mark Mann to name a few of my favorites and you see that lighting is/was so far down the list of things that mattered.
The common thread is connection with the subject. I have found in my work that the first 15 minutes I spend with a subject sets the tone for the entire shoot. If I am to capture something that goes beyond a technically correct image, it has to be given by the person being photographed.
If you’re a photographer, start investing time into learning the story of your clients. If you succeed in connecting with your client, you’ll find it difficult to take disappointing images.
