While working up in Montana this summer, I got to spend most of my lunches on a bench just below this perched common nighthawk. These guys are crepuscular/nocturnal birds which means they usually hunt at twilight or night. Due to their amazing feather coloration and patterns, they are extremely difficult to spot during the day when perched. This particular bird was so tolerant with me eating my lunch beneath him everyday that I decided to try to take some photos! This was shot at 50mm while I was standing on top of the bench. I made sure not to disrupt him or make him flush.
