📷 ‘I just walked and walked and kept staring at everything. And it occurred to me after a while that I might try carrying a camera with me.’ – Nigel Henderson

After moving to London after the Second World War, the English photographer Nigel Henderson spent much of his time wandering around Bethnal Green and Bow in East London. Here he documented the neighbourhoods that had been very badly bombed during the war. Instead of a ghost town, he found life thriving amongst the fragmented and shelled city still echoing strongly with recent events, creating photographs that still resonate today.

In 1953, Henderson photographed the East End, showing the celebrations and preparations around the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. From the street decorations to the market stalls, we’ve picked a few from the series that document this momentous occasion.
