Can we stray away from a society of aunties and uncles who find it their utmost priority to gossip and tear apart people of their own community. Growing up in a brown community, I’ve seen families do whatever they can to protect their reputation and their image. Kids will face deep issues with school, their mental health, etc, and they’ll keep it to themselves. The fear of “what will other people think?” and social pressures deprives future generations of an outlet to speak openly about their struggles. The older adults will gather around to whisper how X is not married, how X isn’t a lawyer/engineer/doctor, how X gained a little weight, or how X married outside of culture. Why do family friends love tearing us apart and spreading rumors that might not even be valid? We are all amazing, hardworking, dedicated people with beautiful dreams, a deep love for our culture while continuing to support our friends and family. But we’re also humans that struggle with normal things like trying to figure out who we are and finding happiness past the boundaries of our society. Can we create an environment where we don’t always have to show the best of our selves? We all pride ourselves in the community we created so we are also responsible in being authentic about it and not while putting everyone else down.
