Due to the fact that the sun barely rises above the horizon in winter in Alaska & our solar is less effective, we decided to give a wind turbine a try to help with our power needs & keep the batteries in the Airstream topped off. While in theory, it’s an awesome idea, it ended up not being a great solution for us. ⁣ ⁣ The biggest reason was that our camp spot rarely had sustained wind multiple days in a row. Had we been parked closer to the coast or higher in the mountains, I think it would have been much more effective.⁣ ⁣ Secondly, the wind turbine we got was a cheap one off Amazon and as such requires a wind speed of >15mph to generate significant power. So while it would spin even in breezy conditions, it’s not until wind speeds are higher that it generates power to the batteries. A major bummer that we didn’t realize until installed. ⁣ ⁣ In the future, we would consider investing into a turbine that operated at lower wind speeds but only if we knew that we would be in a windy area. For now, solar works best + an addition of vertical tilted panels that faced the low angle sun would make a huge difference in winter!⁣ ⁣ #offgrid #offgridliving #boondockinglife #boondocking #freecamping #campinglife #tinyliving #homeiswhereyouparkit #campingvibes #camperlife #airstream #airstreamlife #airstreamliving #airstreamadventures #airstreamdreams #airstreams #travelcouples #travelcouplegoals #fulltimerv #fulltimerving #fulltimetravel #rvliving #rvlifestyle #rvtravel #liveriveted #homeonetheroad #lifeontheroad #rootlessliving #traveltrailer #trailerlife
