WORKSHOP- Madder: Harvest to Color With Yto Barrada and Isa Rodrigues Saturday, March 26th, 11am-5pm This workshop is presented by The Mothership in collaboration with Think Tanger. The Mothership’s first crop of madder (Rubia tinctorum or wild peregrina) - fûwa/garance- is ready to be harvested. Rubia peregrina is one of the species of madder endemic to Morocco and it has been used to create orange, red and purple colours in textiles for thousands of years. Growing Madder requires time and patience, as the roots take at least 3 years to mature and produce enough dye for dyeing. During this workshop, we will work collaboratively through all the steps of extracting the vivid red dye from the Rubia peregrina roots, from harvesting to dyeing fibres. Through engaging in this process, participants will get a deeper understanding of this dye material, explore ancestral processing and dyeing techniques and reflect on issues of sustainability and labor. WORKSHOP FEE Workshop fee includes all materials for experimentation and lunch. Suggested sliding scale based on your income. 300 dh (moroccan students and artists) 500 dh (locals) 800 dh (international) REGISTRATION To register for the workshop, please email [email protected] Workshop fee must be paid in cash at registration to hold your spot.
