“Crater” Lake?
To kick-off Earth Science Week, let’s look at the name “Crater Lake”. Volcanically speaking, a “crater” is a bowl-shaped indentation formed by an outward explosion. The entirety of Crater Lake is actually a “caldera”, or a collapsed depression caused after a volcano releases most of its magma chamber. But fear not! There IS a true geologic crater in Crater Lake, and it is visible in this photo. Can you find it? (Answer below...)
Answer: At the very top of Wizard Island sits a true crater (named "Witches Cauldron", measuring 500 feet wide and 100 feet deep. )
