Monday January 23 – LAXART brings Valentina Magaletti to town for a free show. Known for the drumming that propels Vanishing Twin, the Italian-born, London-based drummer, composer, and percussionist will play a special, expansive solo set at Zebulon. 🥁✨ "In terms of message, it's never a case of showing people that I can play drums, or feeling like an animal in a circus: the woman playing drums... It's more about ingoing and outgoing energies between me and the audience. I want to achieve that balance of the absence and presence of sounds. Making sure that everyone in the room can resonate with what I'm saying and not just listening to a person drumming, which would be excruciatingly tedious, from my point of view, as a listener." Valentina Magaletti is a drummer, composer and percussionist whose goal is to strategically enrich a folkloristic and eclectic palette through endless listening and experimentation with new materials and sounds. She has performed and co-written with many artists including Nicolas Jaar, Jandek, Helm, Raime, Malcom Catto, Charles Hayward, Graham Lewis (Wire, Dome), Thighpaulsandra (Coil, Spiritualized, Julian Cope), Thurston Moore, Bat for Lashes, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), and many more. In her current project, Vanishing Twin (Fire Records) she has a more conventional jazz approach that finds its escape in the drone/field recordings of the percussive approach in her other main experimental/avant-garde duo Tomaga.
