“Manohla Dargis of The New York Times wrote that given everything the star went through in her own life, from her time in an orphanage to issues with substance abuse, ‘it is a relief that she didn't have to suffer through the vulgarities of Blonde, the latest necrophiliac entertainment to exploit her.’”
“In a review from The Washington Post, Ann Hornaday called the film a ‘breathtakingly misguided adaptation’ of the 2000 novel.
“Hornaday, who gave the film a single star, wrote that Blonde ‘not only re-objectifies Monroe but revels in her victimization and self-abnegation.’” (Quoting from The People)
I totally agree “with all of the above” and even that will not suffice to cover for the damage the movie has done to the legend of a goddess of my dreams and a huge ingredient of my female psyche.
I, too, find the movie a very distorted interpretation of Marilyn’s life. And extremely abusive. A male chauvinist take on the legend and myth of Marilyn Monroe in the guise of emphaty and compassion.
It’s deeply disturbing and tragically traumatic to behold a female goddess being slayed, desecrated and “deflowered” so callously once again and decades after her departure.
This was a very bad experience for me.
It reminded me how precarious still is the knife’s edge trail on which we women of the world are trekking even 60 years after dear Norma Jeane Mortensen’s suspicious death (or murder?).
And lastly: Was the legend of Marilyn Monroe sheerly about all these psychological defects and psycho pathological downsides of hers? Was she just an all teasing seductive sexual object and nothing more? Was she just a “beautiful, dirty slut”?
Certainly not. On the contrary, she is one of the longest surviving and mesmerizing female celebrities. She is an early symbol of women’s empowerment.
So why isn’t somebody looking at her rich legacy from this angle and create a true masterpiece deciphering her highly sophisticated and short-lived presence amongst us mortals? Isn’t it high times a talented, ingenious, shining sister of ours take the matter in her hands?
