My rendering of the hexagonal pyramid structure for “Open Invitation.” I wanted this interactive installation to feel kind of like a monument. Monuments are supposed to act as a public record of the things we want to remember—and stoops are places where memories are made. Monuments can be a way for a community express their values (or at least the values they hope to have), so I wanted to create a monument that stands for ease, rest, hospitality, generosity, shared experiences, and feeling like you belong. I put the stoops together in a hexagon because I like how the configuration feels round and welcoming, but still allows enough room in each section so it can be shared by strangers or many friends. In addition to being my favorite polygon 🤓, the hexagon is an iconic NYC symbol—you can find hexagonal asphalt pavers on parks and walkways in all 5 boroughs. 🔜 I’m doing an in-person ‘stoop sit’ TODAY (Sat Oct 22) from 3-5pm at the Cooper Sq in the East Village. Come meet me at the stoop! . . . . “Open Invitation” is an interactive public installation that offers my fellow New Yorkers a shared space to relax and gather. Intended to embody the interconnected experience of city living, this hexagonal artwork is part seating structure and part monument. I was inspired by how the city’s iconic brownstone stoops serve as sites for spontaneous social gatherings, so I decided to create a shared stoop for anyone and everyone. This project will be installed in 3 different public plazas in NYC this month: ☀️ Oct 11 - 14: Chelsea Triangle (W 14th St x 9th Ave, Manhattan) ☀️ Oct 18 - 22: Cooper Square (E 6th St x 3rd Ave, Manhattan) ☀️ Oct 25 - 29: Macri Triangle ([Metropolitan x Meeker, Brooklyn) 👉 Link in bio for more info This artwork was commissioned by @makersmark for their “A Toast to Remarkable NYC” program. #OpenInvitationArt #OpenInvitation #RisaPuno #publicArt #brownstoneStoop #stoopSit #toasttonyc #NYC
