Today would be my dad’s 77th birthday. I spent the morning listening to Warren Zevon’s self titled second album while watching the snow fall like confetti. We were each other in so many ways and the happiest moments I’ve had over the last while are when I think of him, which is constantly. My father was full of the light and everything beautiful about the world, all of the aspects that make life worth living existed within him. I wish more people got to know him but the feeling you get when you hear a great song or laugh with your friends or fall in love or watch the snow fall is what it was like being around him, so you’ve met him many times before. From the second I met him, I fell in love with being his son and couldn’t be prouder that he was my father. Music was one of the biggest parts of his life and his love for it manifested in many ways, from his unbelievable creativity and brilliance with the guitar to more simple things like how he knew every session musician that played on every album ever recorded. His soul came from music and it’s very easy to be with him when you put on a record. So as I listened to Zevon this morning, the lyric that kept coming back to me wasn’t from that album but from the very last song, on his very last release “Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams, touch me as I fall into view. When the winter comes, keep the fires lit and I’ll be right there next to you”.
