On today's #RestorationDay, we take a look 👀 over the shoulder of our conservator Sandra Stelzig, who restored this portrait by Jan van Eyck at the @gemaeldegalerie. Over the course of this year, the Flemish master's "Portrait of a Man with a Red Chaperone" was brought back to radiance: it had a particularly thick and cloudy varnish (transparent coating to protect the painting) with retouchings dating back several centuries. This was carefully removed after a thorough examination of the complex layers of material on the painting, and then a new thin varnish was applied. Link to the blog article in bio. // Am heutigen #TagderRestaurierung werfen wir mal einen Blick 👀 über die Schulter unserer Restauratorin Sandra Stelzig, die in der @gemaeldegalerie dieses Porträt von Jan van Eyck restauriert hat. Im Laufe dieses Jahres wurde das „Bildnis eines Mannes mit rotem Chaperon“ des flämischen Meisters wieder zum Erstrahlen gebracht: Es hatte einen besonders dicken und trüben Firnis (transparenter Überzug zum Schutz des Gemäldes) mit Retuschen aus mehreren Jahrhunderten. Dieser wurde, nach eingehenden Untersuchungen der komplexen Materialschichten auf dem Bild, vorsichtig abgenommen und anschließend ein neuer dünner Firnis aufgetragen.
