NEW WORKSHOP - SAT JULY 23 11AM - 5PM @themothership_tangier Sun Colors: Natural Dye Paints Workshop With Yto Barrada and Isa Rodrigues The peak of Summer at The Mothership brings an abundance of sun-loving flowers from Dyers’ Coreopsis; Marigolds; Black-Eyed Susans, and Cosmos. All these species were traditionally used as sources of dyes for textiles, yielding vibrant yellow and orange tones. In this workshop, we will collectively explore different ways to extract the dyes from the flowers and make all natural paints for textiles and paper. We will discuss how to prepare the fabric and paper for dyeing; materials for thickening the paint and changing the color, and experiment with different mark making techniques, using brushes and stencils. Each participant will create a sampler of techniques and paints to take home, and contribute to a collaborative banner piece, documenting the garden for The Mothership’s collection. No previous experience is necessary. All levels are welcome. This workshop is presented by The Mothership in collaboration with Think Tanger. The Mothership is an artist-led project by Yto Barrada facilitating space for research, artistic exploration and retreat inspired by natural dyes. Founded in Tangier in 2022, the project envisions a ‘eco-campus’ for growing, making, and learning natural dyes and indigenous traditions, and a place for experimental collective artistic practice through art residencies and workshops. The Mothership programming is made possible with the support of @artangel_ldn WORKSHOP FEE includes all materials for experimentation and lunch.
