Hou Jianan is a Chinese contemporary artist born in 1992. He received his degree in oil painting from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. Taking everyday objects as his subject matters, Hou Jianan places them in a virtual field, in which these objects are blown up, bloated, and floating over the ground. They force the viewer to focus on their smooth yet endlessly expanding surfaces. The flow of spirits and emotions are impeded in this illusional land catalyst by desires. These swelling, massive objects seem to dismiss any kind of deep reading and close looking. Hou paints with spray gun, so that his pictorial surface appears with a high-resolution three dimensionality as if it is painted by computational algorithms. The existence of his works transcends hand-drawn brushworks. When human traces become overshadowed by the significance of the objects they created, it alludes to an ironic reflection on consumerism and capitalistic fetish which all of us are embodying. As one of the representative Chinese artists who were born in the 1990s, Hou Jianan has found his own vocabulary for individual artistic expression. His works are continuously exhibited in art institutions in China and around the world.
