Giiwas. Crater Lake already had a name long before settlers came to the West and first caught a glimpse of this breathtaking deep blue lake. Giiwas. Indigenous peoples have lived in the region for 12,000 years and witnessed first-hand the mega colossal eruption of Mt. Mazama 7,700 years ago— the event that took down a 12,000 foot mountain, eventually turning a naked caldera into a stunning lake. More than 6,000 members of the Klamath Tribes still live in the region, and continue to regard Giiwas as sacred — a place of power and respect. 2022 NPS photo by Kate Williams [Photo of Giiwas Crater Lake from lake level with sun shimmering on lake surface] #IndigenousPeoplesDay #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #RecreateResponsibly #CraterLakeNationalPark
